Hungary’s first 4G-LTE mobile broadband service has launched in Budapest. Operated by T-Mobile subsidiary Magyar Telekom, the service now covers ten districts in the capital city following a three-month trial period.
Currently the network covers only 40% of Budapest’s citizens; the operator aims provide coverage to the entire city within the year. Subscribers can only access the service via a specific mobile internet package which requires the use of an LTE-enable dongle.
2011 saw the operator triple the number of 4G-LTE base stations in the country, a substantial investment that demonstrates its faith in the tech. T-Mobile has pledged to expand the network across a larger portion of Hungary in 2012.
