China smartphone market declines in Q3

Smartphone shipments in mainland China saw consecutive quarterly decline with a 5% loss to a total of 66.7 million units, according to analyst company Canalys.

Former Huawei sub-brand Honor was the top shipping vendor in Q3 with 18% market share equating to around 11.8 million units. Oppo (including OnePlus) came in second with 10.9 million units, and Apple slotted in third with 10.6 million units on the back of momentum from its iPhone 15 range launch. Vivo and Xiaomi secured fourth and fifth place with 16% and 14% market share, respectively.

The analyst firm stated Huawei was growing its market share but did not disclose figures. Canalys’ Research Analyst Lucas Zhong noted if the Chinese manufacturer brings its Kirin smartphone processor to its low-to-mid devices in future, it has the “potential to disrupt the competitive dynamic among leading vendors”.

Zhong noted product competitive is “key for growth” crediting the Huawei’s launch of its flagship Mate 60 series for sparking the Chinese market.

“Vendors and channels are collaborating closer on all levels from macro-level strategy to day-to-day operations, especially since 2022, after experiencing a demand downturn and inventory risks together,” added Canalys Research Manager Amber Liu.

“Vendors have been assisting channels in operational efficiency enhancement in various ways. For instance, Honor and Oppo are helping distributors improve cash flow by providing digital financial tools, while Xiaomi started offering distributors the options to acquire Mi stores, optimising resource allocation and allowing ambitious distributors to expand. Facing intense rivalry, vendors continuously experiment with new models of symbiotic relationship with channel partners.”
