Omani Space Communication Technologies (SCT) has launched a tender for the design, manufacture, and launch of its first satellite called "Omansat-1".
The Sultanate intends to launch its first satellite dedicated to telecommunications in 2024.
According to the tender announcement: “The company’s operational plan depends on the launch of an artificial satellite for High Throughput Satellite (HTS) named ‘OmanSat-1’ and related services, which provide coverage for the entire territory of the Sultanate, its economic waters, and the associated external markets, which is expected to be launched by 2024.”
“SCT, therefore, invites satellite vendors to submit technical and commercial proposals for the provision of the above services in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in the tender documents,” added the organisation.
The contract covers both the space-based and ground-control aspects of the programme. Structured into three segments, the first focuses on the space component, and includes the procurement of the satellite itself, launch services, orbit raising support, in-orbit testing, provision of satellite simulators, insurance support, and technical training services.
The tender documents can be obtained by email, or by visiting the SCT’s offices near Sultan Qaboos University in Al Khoudh, between 7 am and 4 pm. Bidders are required to pay a tender fee to access all tender documents.
Given that the project involves Oman launching its first satellite, it is considered one of high strategic importance. It is expected to provide national and regional coverage, with the primary TT&C (telemetry, tracking, and command centre) located in Oman.
SCT, part of the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), is one of the Omani Telecom and Information Technology Group companies.
