Two African regulators announce quality-measuring apps

The telecoms regulators UCC in Uganda and ARTP in Senegal have introduced quality-measuring apps for various communications networks.

On its website, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) says that as part of its effort to promote the interests of consumers and operators in regard to the quality of communications services and equipment, it has developed a monitoring tool on the quality of service (QoS) received by a user of communications services. The tool is called NetQ-UG.

The NetQ-UG App is now available in Google Play Store for Android devices and the Apple App Store for iOS devices, as well as in a web version.

NetQ-UG enables end users to do instant checks and to monitor the quality of internet services received from service providers, and to monitor their usage of data bundles.

It also enables them to acquire information to facilitate planning and direct engagement with their service provider concerning their quality of experience (QoE).

Through crowdsourcing of the anonymised data of its users, the tool provides insight into the coverage of the communications services and the quality of service offered across the country.

Meanwhile Senegal's Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority (ARTP) has also announced the availability of an application for Android and iOS devices.

This time the app enables end users to test the speed of their mobile and Wi-Fi connections. ARTP Sama Reseau, as it is called, aims to help the regulator with its regular assessment of internet quality of service based on the collection of anonymised data via a platform linked to the app.

Users can also view the coverage map of 2G, 3G and 4G mobile networks available in their area where the user is located and report a problem to ARTP.

This tool, says ARTP, is also associated with an advanced analysis platform, allowing ARTP to have a global overview of the QoE of users of mobile networks throughout the territory.
