With data demand growing in the country, Indonesian operator PT XL Axiata has announced what appears to be a fairly aggressive fibre-optic network deployment.
XL is carrying out the extensive fibre-optic network deployment in Central Java, West Java and DI Yogyakarta. This, we are told, is being carried out to support an anticipated surge in consumer demand for data services in these regions. This data demand is expected to grow not only with the ongoing improvement in 4G services, but with 5G, plans for whose future launch are now under way.
If Axiata estimates are correct, data volumes are undoubtedly increasing – the operator has reported recent growth rates of around 70 per cent, 63 per cent and 47 per cent in the three areas where fibre optic growth is under way. This is, unsurprisingly, largely driven by streaming services from platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
Thus XL Axiata is moving quickly to improve its overall network quality via an aggressive ‘fiberisation’ process in most areas in West Java, Central Java and DI Yogyakarta, using fibre to connect up its network of base transceiver stations (BTS).
According to the company’s own figures, by the third quarter of 2019, the total customers in West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta numbered more than 18 million – that’s 17 percent of XL Axiata’s overall customer base. Data customers amount to around 68 per cent while 4G data customers were about 50 per cent.
More than 25,000 2G/3G/4G BTS had been built in West Java by the third quarter of 2019. More than 16,000 2G/3G/4G BTS are spread across Central Java and Yogyakarta.
