AIS abandons digital banking move

Thai operator AIS abandoned a joint venture with Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) to deliver digital banking services.

In a filing to the Thai bourse, AIS stated it would dispose of all investment in the venture dubbed AISCB which was struck in October 2021, however the company did not rule out future business endeavours with the bank.

“AIS’ business direction continues toward the aspiration of providing digital life services and aims to leverage the core business to offer a new digital experience in accessing relevant services to our customers,” wrote AIS CFO Tee Seeumpornroj.

Thai market leader AIS is currently facing a potential merger between its two closest rivals True Move and Dtac. The operator has made moves to stop Thailand’s second and third-largest players from merging.

AIS also moved to expand its broadband offering by acquiring units from jasmine International.
