Middle East operators embrace app opportunities

Entertainment and video streaming apps are enjoying something of a boost in the Middle East at the moment, not least thanks to a new offering from Etisalat Misr and a surge in usage of Zoom in the UAE.

Etisalat Group subsidiary E-Vision has announced that it will form a strategic partnership with Egyptian operator Etisalat Misr to launch Etisalat TV. This is described as a state-of-the-art app enabling viewers to enjoy both English and Arabic movies, series and Ramadan productions across smart devices.

Etisalat Misr will now have access to prepaid TV services with over 109 TV channels and 13,000 VOD hours in partnership with Starz Play, MBC, Rotana, Fox, ART, Good News 4 ME and other leading service providers.

The app can be accessed anywhere and at any time on Android and Apple smart devices and platforms and Etisalat TV’s website. It will also soon be made available on all smart TVs.

Meanwhile, in the UAE, operator Du has revealed a 200 percent increase in its video streaming services, including Zoom, since the onset of the coronavirus outbreak.

The app has been used extensively across the country – following lockdown restrictions announced by the UAE government – by businesses and education professionals teaching lessons from home.

The increase in usage fuelled a 40 percent increase in fixed traffic during the first few days of the coronavirus lockdown. However, there was only a reported 10 percent increase in mobile usage.
