Research and Markets have found that mobile services have become the driver for growth in the wider Pakistan telecom market.
The report found that fixed line internet services have actually declined from a peak of 4% teledensity in 2008. Conversely, mobile subscribers have increased from less than two million in 2002 to 100 million in 2010--passing 120 million early on this year.
Despite mobile penetration exceeding 70%, little progress has been made in internet penetration.
Mobile subscriptions seem to have been growing irrespective of macroeconomic conditions. The difficulty in expanding internet services may be attributed in part to an unhelpful regulatory environment.
