Flexenclosure: Ann Louise Johansson's 2014 Trends

Emerging markets are next in line for a data boom, but infrastructure is a big challenge.

High quality, efficient data centres are essential to house and power data equipment, but traditional brick and mortar data centres take a long time to plan, co-ordinate and construct. The deployment of prefabricated modular data centres will revolutionise the industry during 2014.

They are flexible, energy efficient, much quicker to deploy and will in most cases reduce both project cost and risk compared to brick and mortar constructions. We will see increasing numbers of mobile operators, ISPs and other enterprises choosing prefabricated modular data centres in 2014 – and not only in emerging markets.

More attention is needed to solve the energy cost and environmental problems associated with telecom towers. The trend of specialised tower companies taking over ownership and/or management of telecom sites from mobile operators will accelerate yet further in 2014. Providing fully managed sites to operators on a leased basis as their core business, tower companies will put renewed focus on the reliability of power equipment and on lowering the cost of operations, with new green power solutions reducing diesel fuel consumption at an ever-increasing number of locations.

Ann Louise Johansson is the VP Strategy at Flexenclosure.
