Andicom creates a digital experience in Colombia

Andicom, one of the longest established ICT congresses in Latin America and the leading communications event in Colombia is creating a digital city, U-City. U-City will offer visitors to the congress an interactive showroom of services, applications and solutions which aims to demonstrate how future digital cities and lifestyles can be created.

Supported by the Colombian Ministry of Communications, U-City aims to demonstrate how a wide range of government services such as education, health, trade and government in general could be delivered electronically in the future. The Ministry of Communications in Colombia, through its Connectivity Agenda Program, has already made significant progress in developing an online strategy for delivery of government services in Colombia.

The Andicom Telecommunications Congress, organised by the Research Center for Telecommunications (CINTEL) is one of the main regional events for ICT in Latin America. The Sapnish language event has nearly 3 thousand participants and more than 100 linked national and international sponsors and exhibitors. Its academic and business forums will be addressed by over 70 high level speakers from different continents.

Under the theme of Technology: Creating Welfare and Building the Future, the main academic conference will examine how ICT can be used for the development of society and as a tool for global transformation. Topics to be addressed include e-health, e-education, mobile banking, entertainment, media, new generation TV, e-commerce, privacy of information, policy, regulation and environment. In addition the ITU will present a report on ICT, climate change and global warming.

Other academic events will include a seminar entitled Mobile as 7th Mass Media, to be lead by Tomi Ahonen, a leading strategic 3G consultant, which will examine how the cellular phone and wireless devices may be stronger than the TV or the Internet, viewed as a channel of advertising and media. The regulators and operators forum will examine the conditions that allow transition from a ‘regulation for services’ to a ‘regulation for markets’ on a convergence environment in Latin America.

Finally, the well-known Colombian journalist, Patricia Janiot working for CNN in Atlanta, will conduct a question and answer session entitled: Where is media convergence going? There are a wide range of supporting events co-inciding with Andicom including the NexTV Summit for executives and regulators of TV and multimedia services in Latin America. The European Commission for Information Society and Media will promote access to Cooperation resources allocated by the European Community under the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) during the program.

In the business forum there will be presentations from many of the 60 plus exhibitors and sponsors and a set of Business Rounds will facilitate over 200 business meetings between companies and institutions in sectors demanding telecommunications products and services such as government, education, banking, trade and health, as well as with local entrepreneurs from the telecommunications sector. The event will be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia from October 29th to 31st, 2008.
