The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has concluded a multiband spectrum auction, bringing in a total of US$187.5 million.
Eleven blocks of spectrum were sold across the 700MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz and 3500MHz bands, with four operators – the local units of Airtel, Millicom, Viettel and Vodacom – winning their bids.
TeleGeography reported that Vodacom acquired a block in the 2600MHz band for US$3.3 million along with one in the desirable 700MHz band for US$25.5 million. The operator also spent US$34.4 million to acquire two blocks in the 2300MHz band.
Airtel spent US$39.0 million on two blocks in the 2600MHz band and US$21.1 million on two in the 3500MHz range, while Millicom only obtained spectrum in the 3500MHz band, paying US$34.0 million for two blocks. Viettel meanwhile only acquired a single block in the 2600MHz band for US$30.2 million.
