As 3G becomes more widespread, mobile services will continue to evolve in emerging markets.
- 3G uptake and monetisation accelerates: In countries such as India most of the data users are still on 2G. However once users discover 3G, they get addicted to it like their pals in mature markets. Mobile data uptake will also be fueled by a prospering 2nd hand smart phone market. While LTE is a distant technology (in Latin America at least 6 months), 3G is picking up, thanks to better coverage and increased smart phone penetration. In Africa operators look for new ways to monetize 3G with moving from “all you can eat” plans to tiered pricing. Device subsidies will be decreased and new models will be launched.
- Mobile broadband quality and coverage improve significantly: This is still a big issue and becomes even more important as users adopt advanced services. Small cells and technologies for improving spectral efficiency will be important tools in markets such as India and Latin America.
- Mobile service landscape evolves quickly: In Latin America voice and messaging services change quickly due to services from over the top. In that context net neutrality discussions are heating up. Cloud, M2M and M-payment solutions are at the top of the agenda for enterprises.
