MTN Uganda taps Huawei for core network upgrade

MTN Uganda chose Huawei as its supplier for a network upgrade through a cloud-native 5G-Capable Core, as part of a group-wide move to digitally transform its units and other sectors.

In a statement, MTN Uganda detailed the partnership will span for five years and is dubbed the MUNA project. Huawei will oversee the phased rollout of the upgrade which will unify existing legacy core network elements in a “single vendor” cloud-native core network. The modernisation project is expected to boost service agility innovation for consumers and B2B and improved operational efficiencies.

The upgrade will aid MTN Uganda in its transition to 5G as well as improve the quality of service, the operator stated.

“Through this project, we are modernizing our core network to get ready for 5G in the near future in Uganda. However, this modernisation will also help us immediately in delivering a better quality of our voice network,” said MTN Uganda chief technical and information officer Ali Monzer.
